City, county or state road: why it matters

Who you call about a driveway permit depends on who maintains the road in front of your property, not just your mailing address.

  • Greenville County roads: a driveway approach permit comes from County Public Works (864-467-7016). On county roads without a curb, the apron in the right-of-way must be asphalt.
  • Inside a city’s limits: the city’s own rules and offices apply.
  • State (SCDOT) roads: work in the state right-of-way needs an SCDOT encroachment permit.

Our Greenville driveway permit guide explains how to find out which applies to you.
