A new concrete sidewalk or walkway typically costs $7–$17 per square foot, or about $28–$68 per linear foot for a 4-foot-wide walk, based on HomeGuide’s 2026 national figures. Tearing out and replacing an old walk costs $10–$25+ per square foot. Poured concrete steps run $200–$500 per step. Small jobs cost more per foot because of minimum concrete delivery charges.

Width, thickness and base
- Thickness: most walks are 4 to 6 inches. Thicker where vehicles may cross.
- Width: 4 feet is a common front-walk width and the basis for the per-foot prices above.
- Base: a stone base is essential where drainage is poor. A 4-inch gravel base costs about $10–$15 per linear foot for walks up to 4 feet wide.
- Slope: the walk should shed water to the side, not toward the house or into a low spot.
Steps: comfort and safety basics
- Number of steps: HomeGuide’s rule of thumb is the total height in inches divided by 7, about a 7-inch rise per step.
- Landing: stairs taller than about 5 feet usually need a landing at least 3 feet long.
- Code: riser height, tread depth and handrail requirements are set by the building code. A permit may be needed, so ask the contractor or permit office.
- Grip: a broom finish and, if needed, added treads reduce slips in wet weather.
Replacing a heaved or sunken walk
When tree roots lift a slab or soil washes out from under it, you can sometimes lift it back into place instead of replacing it. Mudjacking a 100-square-foot walk costs about $400–$900, and foam lifting about $800–$2,500. If the slab is broken into pieces or roots will keep pushing, replacement is the better fix. See concrete repair.
Decorative borders and finishes
A plain walk can be dressed up with a stamped or colored border, exposed aggregate, or a stained finish. Stamping adds roughly $3–$4 per square foot; staining $3–$10.

Sidewalk and step questions
Who is responsible for the sidewalk by the street?
It depends on who owns and maintains the sidewalk and right-of-way along your street. In the City of Greenville, ask the city; on county roads, Greenville County Public Works; on state roads, SCDOT. Work in a public right-of-way usually needs a permit.
How wide should a front walk be?
Four feet is a common front-walk width and comfortable for one person with room to pass. Wider walks cost more but feel more generous at a main entrance.
Are precast steps cheaper than poured steps?
Usually. HomeGuide lists precast steps at $100–$350 per step and poured steps at $200–$500. Poured steps can be built to any size or height; precast steps are typically 3 to 5 feet wide and up to six steps tall.
